Complete Backyard Remodeling in San Diego

A backyard remodel in San Diego usually means five trades on one small site: grading and drainage, hardscape, turf, electrical, sometimes a full outdoor kitchen. We design the space, put the whole scope in one written quote, and build it with one licensed local crew, so your project moves in one direction instead of five.

From compact side yards to full hillside terraces, we build backyards for how San Diego actually lives: outside, most of the year.

Planning a full backyard remodel in San Diego

Choosing the right design program for your yard

Before materials get chosen, decide what the yard is actually for. An entertaining yard leans on a generous patio, an outdoor kitchen or bar, and lighting built for evenings with guests.

A family yard prioritizes durable turf, sightlines back to the kitchen so kids stay visible, and surfaces that shrug off bikes, balls and daily traffic rather than showing every scuff.

A low-water yard leans into San Diego’s climate on purpose, trading thirsty lawn for turf, gravel, and planting that thrives on minimal irrigation without looking sparse.

Most real backyards borrow from all three. The design program is the decision that should happen before a single paver gets picked.

What drives the cost of a backyard remodel

Yard size sets the baseline: more square footage means more base material, more turf, more planting and more labor across every trade.

Grading is the factor people underestimate. A flat, easy-access yard builds far more efficiently than a sloped lot that needs retaining walls, terracing or re-grading before hardscape can even start.

The number of trades matters too: a patio-and-turf project touches fewer specialties than a full remodel with electrical, gas, plumbing and masonry all coordinating on one site.

Material grade is the lever you control most: standard pavers versus large-format porcelain, a simple fire pit versus a full masonry fireplace. We put every one of these into a single written, itemized quote so nothing is a surprise once work begins.

Designing outdoor living for San Diego's climate

San Diego’s mild climate is the whole reason a backyard remodel pays off here: yards get used nearly every month of the year, not just a few warm ones.

But the county is not one climate. Coastal yards deal with marine layer, salt air and afternoon fog that an inland yard never sees, while canyon and hillside lots bring slope, brush clearance considerations and views worth designing around rather than blocking with a wall.

Indoor-outdoor flow matters more here than almost anywhere: sliding or bifold doors, matched flooring heights, and a covered transition zone turn the backyard into an actual extension of the house.

On canyon lots, we also plan sightlines and privacy around what is actually behind the fence, since a well-placed wall or planting screen can do more for the feel of a yard than any single feature.

Phasing your remodel and avoiding common mistakes

Not every yard needs to happen at once, and phasing is often the smarter move: get grading, drainage and hardscape right first since everything else builds on top of it, then add the outdoor kitchen, fire feature or pergola once budget allows.

The mistake we see most is doing it backward: buying furniture and a grill island before the drainage and base underneath are sorted out.

The other common mistake is designing trade by trade instead of as one yard: a paver patio picked before the turf line is set, an electrical run added after the hardscape is poured, a retaining wall built without the drainage plan behind it.

A single plan and one crew across the whole project avoids most of that, which is exactly why we scope backyards as one job instead of a string of separate ones.

We recently had our side yard completely redone, and the experience with Sunny's Builders was incredible from start to finish. I was a bit nervous at first about hiring a company I found online, but I'm so glad I did. They exceeded every expectation! Our side yard looks incredible, and the entire process was smooth, professional, and stress-free. The team was professional, communicative, and truly cared about every detail. They transformed a space we had ignored for years into something beautiful and functional. We couldn't be happier with the results and highly recommend them to anyone looking for quality work and a stress-free process!

Frequently asked questions

How long does a backyard remodel take in San Diego?

It depends on scope. A patio-and-turf yard is a much shorter build than a full remodel with an outdoor kitchen and retaining walls. Your written quote comes with a schedule for your specific project, so you know the timeline before we start.

Do I need permits for a backyard remodel?

Some work does need permits in San Diego County, typically covered structures, gas lines and certain electrical runs. During the free in-home consultation we walk you through exactly what your project requires.

Can you remodel a sloped or hillside backyard?

Yes. Slopes are common across San Diego and we build retaining walls and terraced levels that turn them into usable space. Several projects in our gallery started as hillsides.

How much does a backyard remodel cost in San Diego?

Every yard prices differently depending on size, materials and scope. We measure on-site at your free in-home consultation and put the whole scope into a written, itemized quote, so you know the real number before committing to anything.

Do you provide a design before construction starts?

Yes. Every backyard remodel starts with a design and layout plan, not just a materials list, so you can see how patios, turf, planting and features relate before anything is built. That design becomes the basis for your written, itemized quote, and adjustments happen on paper, which is far easier and far less disruptive than changing course mid-construction.

Can a backyard remodel be phased to include an ADU later?

Yes, and it is worth planning for up front even if the ADU comes in a later phase. Utility routing, grading and access points can be laid out during the initial remodel so a future ADU does not mean tearing out a finished patio or turf area. Mentioning that plan early lets us design the yard around it from day one.

How much upkeep does a remodeled backyard need?

Far less than a traditional lawn-heavy yard, by design. Artificial turf skips mowing entirely, drip irrigation and climate-right planting cut watering to a minimum, and hardscape needs little beyond occasional cleaning and joint sand top-ups. The goal is a yard that looks intentional with upkeep measured in minutes, not weekends, which matters as much as how the space looks on day one.

Can you remodel a backyard that already has a pool?

Yes, we design and build around existing pools regularly, from re-decking and coping to adding an outdoor kitchen, fire feature or planting that ties the whole yard together. We protect the pool and equipment throughout construction and plan access carefully, since working near an active pool takes more coordination than an open yard but is very much routine for us.

What warranty do you offer?

Warranty length follows the material, because different materials wear in different ways: retaining walls 20-Year, aluminum and vinyl 20-Year, pavers 15-Year, artificial turf 15-Year, concrete 10-Year, wood 5-Year and irrigation 1-Year. That is our workmanship warranty on the installation, written into your contract. Ask us what applies to your scope at the in-home consultation.
