Planning an outdoor kitchen that works for how you actually cook

Layouts, materials and appliance choices

Every outdoor kitchen starts as a shape before it becomes a list of finishes. A straight run against a wall suits a simple grill station, while an L-shaped or peninsula layout opens prep space and lets the cook face the yard instead of a fence. Homeowners researching outdoor kitchen contractors in San Diego often start with finish photos, but layout is the decision that determines whether the space gets used every week or turns into a backdrop nobody stands behind.

Framing is usually block or steel stud, and both perform fine outside when waterproofed correctly; the visible choice is the finish over it, from stacked stone to stucco to tile. Appliance tiers matter as much as counters: a basic grill island differs from one that also carries a side burner, a warming drawer, a beverage center and a sink, and each addition changes the plumbing, gas and electrical behind the wall, not just the appliance itself.

What actually drives the cost of an outdoor kitchen

Size sets the baseline: a compact grill station needs far less structure, counter and utility work than a full cooking wall with bar seating. From there, the utility runs matter most. Gas, water, power and sometimes a drain all have to reach the island, and the further that run travels from an existing utility source, the more trenching, conduit and inspection the project carries before a single block gets laid.

Appliance count compounds the utility question, since every grill, burner, fridge or ice maker needs its own connection point and clearance. Material grade shifts things too: sealed natural stone and porcelain slab counters ask more of the build than stucco-clad block. Site access plays a quieter role, since a kitchen built where equipment and material can drive close to the work goes faster than one reached only by hand-carrying everything through a side gate.

Built for how San Diego actually cooks outside

San Diego’s mild climate means an outdoor kitchen gets used in nearly every month of the year, not just a short summer window, which is part of why the space earns its keep here more than in most of the country. That year-round use is also why we plan for it: counters, cabinetry and hardware near the coast face steady marine air, and materials that would be fine inland can pit, stain or corrode faster within a few miles of the water.

Evenings cool off quickly even after a warm afternoon, so kitchens built near a fire feature or patio heater tend to stay in use later into the night. Gas and electrical work for an outdoor kitchen is generally permitted in San Diego jurisdictions, and the exact requirements depend on your city and the scope of the run, which is something we confirm for your address rather than guess at.

Planning the layout before you pick a single finish

The best outdoor kitchens are planned around a work triangle, the same idea as an indoor kitchen: grill, prep counter and storage close enough to move between in a step or two, not a lap around the island. Wind matters here in a way indoor kitchens never consider, since smoke and heat should drift away from the dining table, not across it, so we look at your yard’s typical afternoon breeze before fixing the grill’s position.

Proximity to the house also shapes cost and usability: a kitchen near the indoor kitchen wall shortens every utility run, while one placed for the best yard view costs more to plumb but often gets used more. Seating overhang, walkway width behind the cook and sightlines to the pool or fire feature are the details worth settling on paper before any masonry goes in the ground.

We had a great experience with Sunny Builders. They just completed the first project for us, revamping our front yard. They were very efficient; just 2 days ago, our yard had was all weeds and dirt. We left the design to Sunny Builders and they made it look better than we imagined. They did the job quickly and at a very reasonable price with no surprise fees. I would definitely recommend them and we'll be using their services again.

We recently had our side yard completely redone, and the experience with Sunny's Builders was incredible from start to finish. I was a bit nervous at first about hiring a company I found online, but I'm so glad I did. They exceeded every expectation! Our side yard looks incredible, and the entire process was smooth, professional, and stress-free. The team was professional, communicative, and truly cared about every detail. They transformed a space we had ignored for years into something beautiful and functional. We couldn't be happier with the results and highly recommend them to anyone looking for quality work and a stress-free process!

Frequently asked questions

Do outdoor kitchens need permits in San Diego?

Gas and electrical runs typically do. We walk you through what your design requires during the consultation.

What counters survive outdoors?

Sealed stone, concrete and porcelain hold up best. We will steer you away from surfaces that fail in UV and marine air.

Can you add a kitchen to my existing patio?

Often yes, if utilities can reach it and the slab can carry it. We assess that at your free in-home consultation.

What size island do I need for a basic BBQ setup?

A basic grill island can be a single run holding just a grill and a small counter, often four to six feet long, enough for one cook and a landing spot for plates. If you want a side burner or storage doors, plan extra counter length so appliances do not crowd each other. We size the island to your appliances and how many people typically cook at once, not a generic template.

Should the outdoor kitchen face the house or the yard?

Most cooks want both: a sightline back to the house so the cook can still see who is at the door, and a clear view of the dining or lounge area so conversation carries. A peninsula or L-shaped island often does this better than a straight run against the house wall. We walk your specific yard before recommending orientation, since fences, pools and shade change the answer.

Do I need a vent hood for an outdoor kitchen?

Open-air kitchens generally do not require the ventilation an enclosed indoor kitchen needs, since smoke and heat dissipate outside. Once you cover the cooking area with a solid roof or enclose it on multiple sides, ventilation becomes a real consideration and sometimes a code requirement. We evaluate that during design if your layout includes any kind of roof or partial enclosure.

Can I add appliances to my outdoor kitchen later?

Sometimes, if the original build left capped utility stubs and extra space in the island for a future grill, burner or fridge. Retrofitting an island that was not planned for expansion usually means opening finished masonry to add a gas or water line, which costs more than building it in from the start. Tell us about future plans during design so we can rough in for them.
