Turf quality shows up in year three, not day one. The difference is base preparation, drainage, seaming and infill, which is why we build turf like hardscape: from the ground up.

Old lawn out, base graded and compacted for drainage and a flat lie.
Dense, natural-look fibers with seams you will not find later.
Bender board, paver bands or walls so edges stay crisp.
The right infill for the use case, power-brushed upright at handoff.
Extra drainage and deodorizing infill where dogs run.

Turf fiber generally comes in polyethylene or nylon blends, sometimes combined for a mix of softness and durability. Polyethylene feels the most like real grass underfoot and holds up well in everyday yards. Nylon blends resist matting better under heavy foot traffic or a trampoline, but feel firmer. Pile height and blade shape also change the look, from a tight, manicured lawn feel to a longer, more natural blend of colors.
Infill is where a lot of the performance lives. Silica sand is the standard base infill for weight and blade support. Zeolite or antimicrobial infills add odor control, which matters most for pet turf. Rubber infill adds cushioning for play areas but can hold more heat in direct sun. The backing underneath, and how well it drains, matters just as much as the fiber on top.
Size sets the baseline, but access changes the labor involved just as much. A backyard reachable only through a gate means base material and old sod get moved by hand instead of machine, which slows the job down. Removing an existing lawn, old turf, or hardscape before the new base goes in is its own phase of work and adds to the timeline before installation even starts.
Grading and drainage needs shift with the lot. Yards with slopes, low spots, or heavy clay soil need more base preparation to keep water moving instead of pooling under the turf. The grade of turf product you choose, plus how complex the shape of the area is, with curves, tight corners or multiple zones, also affects how long the job takes and how much material gets used.
Soil across San Diego County ranges from sandy and fast-draining near the coast to dense clay or adobe further inland. Clay-heavy lots need a deeper, well-compacted base to keep the turf from settling unevenly over time, while sandy soils need enough compaction to avoid a soft, spongy feel underfoot. Getting this step right is what separates turf that still looks flat in year five from turf that sags.
Water-use rules and turf-related rebate programs come and go across the county, and interest in artificial turf tends to spike whenever restrictions tighten. Sun exposure also varies a lot block to block: south-facing, reflective yards near stucco walls run hotter than shaded or coastal lots, which is worth factoring into fiber color and placement before you commit to a layout.
Ask specifically about base depth and how it will be compacted, since this is the step that determines whether the lawn stays flat. Ask where seams will fall and how they will be finished, because a poorly placed seam near a high-traffic path is the first thing that shows wear. A contractor who can answer these questions in detail, rather than in general terms, is usually the one who has done the work correctly before.
Get a written itemized quote that spells out base material, turf product, infill type and edging, not just a single number for the whole job. Ask to see photos of a base cross-section from a past project if they have one. And confirm who is actually doing the physical work: one local crew with a single point of contact tends to produce more consistent results than a job passed between subcontractors.

Quality turf installed on a proper base typically serves well over a decade of normal family use. Fiber quality and base prep are the difference.
Yes, with a pet system: fast-draining base and deodorizing infill keep it clean and cool enough for daily use.
It runs warmer than grass on peak afternoons. Lighter fibers, shade and a quick rinse manage it; we will be straight with you about placement.
Silica sand is the standard infill for weight, blade support and drainage. Zeolite and antimicrobial infills are designed to control odor, which matters most for pet areas. Rubber infill adds cushioning for play spaces but absorbs more heat in direct sun. Most yards use one primary infill, though pet and play areas sometimes combine two for the right mix of drainage and comfort.
Less than real grass, but not none. Rinsing off dust and pet waste, brushing the fibers occasionally to keep them upright, and clearing leaves or debris keeps it looking full. Turf does not need mowing, fertilizing or watering the way a lawn does, which is the main appeal, but a few minutes of upkeep now and then keeps it looking new for longer.
Yes, with a different base approach than a soil installation. Drainage and a cushioning underlayment matter even more over a hard surface, since water needs somewhere to go and the surface needs enough give underfoot. It is a common way to convert an unused concrete patio or side yard into usable green space without breaking out the slab.
Yes, putting green turf is a different product from lawn turf, built with a shorter, denser pile and a true, consistent roll. Base preparation still matters just as much, since an uneven base shows up immediately in ball roll. It is one of the more specialized turf applications we install, alongside standard lawns and pet systems.
Warranty length follows the material we install: artificial turf 15-Year. That is our workmanship warranty on the installation, written into your contract, and we walk through exactly what it covers on your project at the in-home consultation.
