Building in Chula Vista
Chula Vista’s newer neighborhoods, Otay Ranch chief among them, often hand new owners a backyard that is just graded dirt, which is actually the easiest starting point for turf since there is no old sod or hardscape to remove first. Base prep goes straight in over compacted native soil, and a family-sized play lawn can go from bare dirt to finished green space in one clean phase rather than a demolition-then-build sequence.
On the older west side of Chula Vista, established lots often carry a tired lawn that has been mowed for decades and needs full removal before turf goes down. Chula Vista’s inland valley heat pushes many families toward turf specifically because it stays green through the hot months without a watering schedule, and a properly built pet or play area holds up to daily use without the bare, worn patches real grass shows first.
Four steps. One crew. Zero surprises.

What San Diego clients say
We had a great experience with Sunny Builders. They just completed the first project for us, revamping our front yard. They were very efficient; just 2 days ago, our yard had was all weeds and dirt. We left the design to Sunny Builders and they made it look better than we imagined. They did the job quickly and at a very reasonable price with no surprise fees. I would definitely recommend them and we'll be using their services again.
We recently had our side yard completely redone, and the experience with Sunny's Builders was incredible from start to finish. I was a bit nervous at first about hiring a company I found online, but I'm so glad I did. They exceeded every expectation! Our side yard looks incredible, and the entire process was smooth, professional, and stress-free. The team was professional, communicative, and truly cared about every detail. They transformed a space we had ignored for years into something beautiful and functional. We couldn't be happier with the results and highly recommend them to anyone looking for quality work and a stress-free process!
We had a GREAT experience with Sunny Builder's Group! From Rachel, our first contact, to Roei and his crew of workers, these folks did an amazing job accommodating us on short notice and transforming our side yard into a beautiful outdoor living space. They completed the job in only 8 days, from first call and appointment to assess the project, to finishing the job! Roei and his men were honest, professional, and paid great attention to detail in creating a lovely functional area for us to get the most out of our small yard. We would highly recommend them for any job, large or small and will definitely contact them in the future for additional projects!

Frequently asked questions
Is turf a good fit for a new-build yard in Otay Ranch?
Very much so. Most Otay Ranch backyards start as bare graded dirt, which means turf installation skips the removal step entirely and goes straight to base preparation. It is often the most efficient way to turn a blank-slate yard into usable green space without waiting for real grass to establish.
Will turf survive Chula Vista's summer heat?
Yes, turf is one of the more heat-reliable surfaces here since it will not brown or thin the way real grass does in a hot, dry stretch. It will run warmer underfoot than grass on peak afternoons, so we talk through fiber color and shade placement for family and pet areas specifically.
How long does artificial turf last?
Quality turf installed on a proper base typically serves well over a decade of normal family use. Fiber quality and base prep are the difference.
Is artificial turf safe for dogs?
Yes, with a pet system: fast-draining base and deodorizing infill keep it clean and cool enough for daily use.
Does turf get hot in the sun?
It runs warmer than grass on peak afternoons. Lighter fibers, shade and a quick rinse manage it; we will be straight with you about placement.
What's the difference between turf infill types?
Silica sand is the standard infill for weight, blade support and drainage. Zeolite and antimicrobial infills are designed to control odor, which matters most for pet areas. Rubber infill adds cushioning for play spaces but absorbs more heat in direct sun. Most yards use one primary infill, though pet and play areas sometimes combine two for the right mix of drainage and comfort.
Does artificial turf need any maintenance?
Less than real grass, but not none. Rinsing off dust and pet waste, brushing the fibers occasionally to keep them upright, and clearing leaves or debris keeps it looking full. Turf does not need mowing, fertilizing or watering the way a lawn does, which is the main appeal, but a few minutes of upkeep now and then keeps it looking new for longer.
Can artificial turf be installed over concrete or pavers?
Yes, with a different base approach than a soil installation. Drainage and a cushioning underlayment matter even more over a hard surface, since water needs somewhere to go and the surface needs enough give underfoot. It is a common way to convert an unused concrete patio or side yard into usable green space without breaking out the slab.
Is artificial turf good for putting greens?
Yes, putting green turf is a different product from lawn turf, built with a shorter, denser pile and a true, consistent roll. Base preparation still matters just as much, since an uneven base shows up immediately in ball roll. It is one of the more specialized turf applications we install, alongside standard lawns and pet systems.
What warranty covers this work?
Warranty length follows the material we install: artificial turf 15-Year. That is our workmanship warranty on the installation, written into your contract, and we walk through exactly what it covers on your project at the in-home consultation.
