Choosing and placing a fire feature that gets used all year

Fire pit, fire table or full fireplace

A fire pit sits low and open, built for a circle of chairs and easy sightlines across the yard; a fire table trades some flame height for a usable tabletop surrounding the burner, good for smaller patios doing double duty as a bar. A full outdoor fireplace stands vertical, throws heat in one direction and reads as architecture more than furniture. Most San Diego yards comparing fire pit builders are choosing between the first two, since a fireplace usually needs a larger footprint.

Shape follows the same logic: round and square pits suit a gathered seating group, while a linear trough reads sleeker against a modern patio and works well tucked along a low wall. Finish materials range from stacked stone and stucco to metal surrounds, and each holds up differently outside; stone and stucco age the most gracefully, while unsealed metal can show rust streaks near the coast within a season or two.

What drives the cost of a fire feature

Size and BTU output set the baseline, since a larger burner pushing more heat needs a bigger gas line and sometimes a dedicated regulator. The length of that gas line matters just as much: a fire feature near an existing gas meter or outdoor kitchen line is a simpler run than one placed across the yard, where trenching and inspection add real scope.

Masonry complexity and finish material grade move the number too, since a simple block surround costs less labor and material than a stone-veneered fireplace with a raised hearth. Whether the feature stands alone or ties into existing seat walls and hardscape changes the scope as well, and site access, how easily equipment and material reach the build location, plays its usual quiet role.

Why fire features make sense in a San Diego yard

San Diego’s daytime warmth is deceptive: even after a warm afternoon, coastal and near-coastal evenings cool off fast once the sun drops, and a fire feature is often what keeps people outside past that point instead of heading in. That swing is sharper close to the water, which is part of why fire features are one of the most-used additions we build here.

Marine air is hard on unsealed metal and steel components, so finishes and hardware near the coast need to be chosen for corrosion resistance, not just looks. Gas line work for a fire feature is generally permitted in San Diego jurisdictions, and placement is also shaped by general fire-safety setback guidance, both of which we confirm for your specific address and HOA before design is final.

Gas versus wood, and where to put it

Gas fire features light with a switch, produce no smoke, and burn cleaner, which matters under regional air-quality rules and for anyone with smoke-sensitive neighbors close by. Wood-burning pits cost less to build since there is no gas line, and many people simply prefer the crackle and smell of a real fire. The honest trade-off is convenience and air quality against ritual and lower upfront construction.

Placement should follow how people actually sit outside: close enough to the main patio or kitchen that guests drift over without a trek, but far enough from low branches, fences and combustible cover to respect clearance guidance. Seat walls built at a comfortable height around the feature turn it into the actual center of the yard, which is usually a better investment than a taller, showier build nobody gathers around.

We had a great experience with Sunny Builders. They just completed the first project for us, revamping our front yard. They were very efficient; just 2 days ago, our yard had was all weeds and dirt. We left the design to Sunny Builders and they made it look better than we imagined. They did the job quickly and at a very reasonable price with no surprise fees. I would definitely recommend them and we'll be using their services again.

We recently had our side yard completely redone, and the experience with Sunny's Builders was incredible from start to finish. I was a bit nervous at first about hiring a company I found online, but I'm so glad I did. They exceeded every expectation! Our side yard looks incredible, and the entire process was smooth, professional, and stress-free. The team was professional, communicative, and truly cared about every detail. They transformed a space we had ignored for years into something beautiful and functional. We couldn't be happier with the results and highly recommend them to anyone looking for quality work and a stress-free process!

Frequently asked questions

Gas or wood-burning fire pit?

Gas wins for convenience and air-quality rules; wood wins for ritual. Local regulations and your patience for smoke usually decide.

Do fire pits need permits?

Gas lines typically involve permitted work; placement rules vary by jurisdiction and HOA. We handle the specifics for your address.

How far must a fire feature sit from the house?

Clearances depend on the feature type and local code; we design placement around those requirements from the start.

How big should a fire pit be for my patio?

Most residential fire pits run somewhere between three and five feet across, sized to the seating around them rather than the patio itself. A pit that is too small gets crowded by chairs pulled in close; one that is too large pushes seating back until conversation gets awkward. We size the pit to your actual seating layout, not a standard number.

Can a fire pit go on a wood deck?

Only with the right protection and clearance, since heat and embers are a real risk on wood decking. Fire tables and certain enclosed gas features rated for combustible surfaces are the safer route on a deck, along with a heat-resistant pad underneath. We assess your deck material and the feature type together before recommending placement.

What is the difference between a fire pit and a fire table?

A fire pit is typically lower, wider and built for an open flame with seating gathered around it. A fire table adds a flat surface around the burner at a comfortable arm height, so it doubles as a place to set drinks or food while the flame stays contained, usually behind glass beads or lava rock. Both run on the same gas or wood choice.

Do fire features need a cover or maintenance?

A cover keeps rain, debris and marine air off the burner and finish between uses, which matters more near the coast than inland. Gas features benefit from an occasional check of the burner ports and ignition, while wood-burning pits need ash cleared out regularly. Stone and masonry surrounds hold up with little upkeep beyond an occasional rinse.
