Planning a driveway paving project in San Diego

Driveway paver, concrete and border options

A driveway sees weight and turning force a patio never will, which narrows your material choices to systems rated for it. Interlocking concrete pavers distribute a vehicle’s weight across the whole field through their joints, and individual units can be replaced without touching the rest of the drive. Permeable pavers use the same interlock with open joints that let water pass through the surface instead of running off it, which some San Diego properties use to help manage stormwater runoff.

Concrete offers a single continuous surface with fewer seams for weeds or shifting to exploit, and it takes color and stamped texture well if you want more than plain gray. Borders and aprons in a contrasting material, whether that’s a paver band around a concrete field or the reverse, frame the driveway and tie it visually to the front entry. The honest trade-off is repairability: a paver section lifts and relays, a concrete crack is permanent.

What drives the cost of a driveway

Size is the obvious factor, but a driveway’s shape multiplies it: a straight run to a garage costs less per square foot than a wide apron with a turnaround or a curved approach. Access affects equipment, too. Compaction equipment and delivery trucks need a path to the work area, and a driveway boxed in by narrow side yards or a steep approach slows the job down.

Demolition varies by what’s already there. Removing an old asphalt driveway is a different job than removing a cracked slab, and both take longer than clearing bare decomposed granite. Base depth for a driveway runs well beyond what a patio needs, since it has to carry vehicle load without rutting, and material grade follows the same logic: driveway-rated pavers and reinforced concrete cost more than the equivalent patio-grade product. Slope adds engineering time on any driveway steeper than a gentle grade.

Built for San Diego driveways specifically

San Diego’s expansive clay soils and decomposed granite both react to seasonal moisture, and a driveway asks more of that base than any other hardscape on the property because it carries concentrated, repeated load. A driveway-rated base depth, properly compacted in lifts, is what keeps a drive from developing dips at the tire tracks over time. Coastal properties also see faster wear on unsealed edge restraint and unprotected steel from salt-laden air.

Local stormwater rules increasingly favor permeable surfaces for driveways and hardscape, since impervious concrete and asphalt push runoff straight into the street. Permeable pavers are one way to address that while keeping a durable, drivable surface. Grading still has to move surface water away from the garage and the house regardless of material, and some HOAs and jurisdictions have their own requirements on driveway width, material and color that are worth confirming early.

Curb appeal and load rating: getting the balance right

A driveway is one of the largest visible surfaces on the property, so its material and pattern carry real weight for curb appeal, sometimes more than the front door itself. Matching the driveway’s tone to the house’s trim or roofline, and framing it with a contrasting border or apron, makes a bigger visual difference than most homeowners expect for the effort involved. It’s worth choosing the look before locking in the material, not after.

Load rating matters just as much as looks if the driveway sees anything heavier than daily cars: a work truck, a boat trailer, an RV parked between trips. Ask what base depth and paver or concrete thickness is specified for your actual vehicles, not a generic residential minimum. A driveway built to standard car loads and then parked with an RV will show it within a few seasons, usually right where the tires sit.

What San Diego clients say

I couldn't be happier with the work this company did on my driveway. From my first interaction with the sales representative to speaking with the owner and watching the crew in action, every step of the process was professional, organized, and handled with real expertise. The crew worked incredibly hard. They broke up heavy concrete, removed large tree roots that had caused major damage, and poured a beautiful new driveway that completely transformed the look of my home. What really stood out to me was how well they worked together. There was constant teamwork, positive energy, and even laughter while they tackled some very tough labor. To me, that says everything about a company's leadership: when a crew is that upbeat and cohesive, it reflects owners who treat their team well and run a solid operation. I had been living with cracked and raised concrete for far too long, so seeing the finished result was such a relief. The driveway looks better than I imagined it ever could. I also discovered they offer more than just concrete services. Had I realized that sooner, I absolutely would have used them for other projects I have coming up. They will definitely be my first call in the future. If you're looking for quality work done by people who truly care, I highly recommend this company. They exceeded my expectations in every way.

We had a great experience with Sunny Builders. They just completed the first project for us, revamping our front yard. They were very efficient; just 2 days ago, our yard had was all weeds and dirt. We left the design to Sunny Builders and they made it look better than we imagined. They did the job quickly and at a very reasonable price with no surprise fees. I would definitely recommend them and we'll be using their services again.

We recently had our side yard completely redone, and the experience with Sunny's Builders was incredible from start to finish. I was a bit nervous at first about hiring a company I found online, but I'm so glad I did. They exceeded every expectation! Our side yard looks incredible, and the entire process was smooth, professional, and stress-free. The team was professional, communicative, and truly cared about every detail. They transformed a space we had ignored for years into something beautiful and functional. We couldn't be happier with the results and highly recommend them to anyone looking for quality work and a stress-free process!

Frequently asked questions

Paver or concrete driveway, which lasts longer?

Both last decades when built on the right base. Pavers cost more, repair invisibly and never show a crack; concrete costs less and is one continuous surface. We quote both honestly.

Can I park on it right away?

Paver driveways take traffic almost immediately after final compaction; concrete needs cure time. The schedule in your quote spells it out.

Do you replace just the broken section?

Sometimes, if the base underneath is sound. We check that before recommending a patch you would regret.

Can a driveway be built to handle an RV or boat trailer?

Yes, with a base depth and material thickness specified for that load rather than standard car traffic. We ask about your actual vehicles, including anything you park occasionally, before finalizing the base design. Retrofitting a driveway that wasn't built for heavier loads usually means addressing rutting or cracking exactly where the extra weight sits.

What is a permeable paver driveway?

Permeable pavers use the same interlocking system as standard pavers but with open, gravel-filled joints that let rainwater pass through the surface into a stone reservoir below instead of running off into the street. They help manage stormwater on-site and can factor into local drainage requirements. They install and perform similarly to standard pavers, with a different base structure underneath.

Should the driveway apron match the street or the house?

There's no single right answer. Matching the house ties the driveway visually to the entry and front landscaping, which reads well from the street. Some homeowners prefer a neutral apron near the curb with the statement material closer to the garage. We'll show you both approaches with your actual materials before you decide.

How wide should a driveway be for two cars?

Comfortable side-by-side parking generally needs meaningfully more width than a single-car drive, plus additional clearance if doors need to open on both sides regularly. Lot width, setback rules and where the garage sits all factor into what's actually achievable on your property. We measure your site and lay out options during the consultation.

What warranty covers this work?

Warranty length follows the material we install: pavers 15-Year and concrete 10-Year. That is our workmanship warranty on the installation, written into your contract, and we walk through exactly what it covers on your project at the in-home consultation.
