Exterior Remodeling in San Diego

Backyard remodels, pavers, artificial turf, retaining walls and outdoor kitchens for San Diego homeowners, designed and built by one licensed local crew.

From Craftsman lots in North Park to new builds in the south bay, San Diego yards range from compact urban patios to view lots with real slope. Most of the county's outdoor living happens ten months a year, so drainage, shade and durable surfaces matter more here than almost anywhere.

What we build in San Diego

What we build in San Diego depends entirely on which pocket of the city you are in. Craftsman lots in South Park and Golden Hill favor tight, layered patios and low retaining walls that work with old grading, while flatter parcels in Otay Mesa and Mira Mesa give a crew room for a full backyard program in one pass. Either way, the lot’s age tells us where to start.

Because outdoor living runs most of the year here, we lean on durable surfaces and real drainage over anything decorative-first. A canyon-adjacent lot in Tierrasanta needs different water management than a flat pad off University Avenue, and a hillside view lot behaves nothing like a rowhouse yard downtown. We plan each project around the ground you actually have, not a generic San Diego template.

We recently hired Sunny Builders to build our backyard BBQ area, and the results are fantastic. They helped bring our vision to life and created a beautiful, functional outdoor space that our family enjoys every week. The crew was punctual, respectful, and maintained a clean worksite throughout the project. Their expertise and dedication were evident in every step of the process. We have received so many compliments from friends and neighbors. Highly recommended!

I had an excellent experience with Sunny Builders San Diego. From the initial consultation to the final installation, the team was professional, responsive, and attentive to every detail. My new kitchen turned out even better than I imagined. The quality of the workmanship is outstanding, the project was completed on time, and communication throughout the process was excellent. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a reliable and skilled contractor for a kitchen remodel. Thank you for transforming my kitchen into a beautiful and functional space!

I had Sunny Builders re-build an existing wood and brick fence into a solid brick wall with stucco finish. I had them run an electrical line aline the wall for a future shed build. They were fast and got the project going right away. And now I have a great looking wall that makes my side and back yard look like a new house!

Frequently asked questions

Do older San Diego neighborhoods need extra permitting for backyard work?

It depends on the neighborhood, the lot's slope and whether the home sits in a historic district. Some areas add review steps that newer subdivisions do not. As a licensed, bonded and insured California contractor we check the specifics for your address during a free in-home consultation before anything is priced.

Can a small urban San Diego lot still fit a full outdoor living space?

Usually yes, with the right layout. Compact city lots respond well to multi-use hardscape and vertical planning rather than trying to fit everything at ground level. We walk the site, measure what you actually have to work with, and put the options in a written itemized quote.

How does the free in-home consultation work?

Call (858) 888-1725 or send the form and we call you back to book a time. We come to your home, walk the space with you, measure and talk through scope and budget. It usually takes 30–60 minutes, and your written, itemized quote follows within two to three days. It is free for homeowners, with no obligation. Two situations are quoted differently: an appraisal-style quote on a property you do not own yet, and a quote for an insurance claim, are $350 each, credited in full toward your project if you go ahead with us.

How much does a backyard remodel cost in San Diego?

It depends on the size of the yard, the materials and the scope. A paver patio prices very differently from a full outdoor kitchen. We measure on-site at your free in-home consultation and put the whole scope into a written, itemized quote, so you know the real number before committing to anything.

Is there a minimum project size?

Yes. Our projects generally start around $6,000 to $8,000. Below that a full design-build crew is not the right fit, and you would be paying for overhead your job does not need. Ask anyway: for smaller work in the San Diego area we will point you to a handyman we trust rather than leave you without an answer.

Do you provide 3D design and renderings?

Yes. When you sign the project with us, the 3D design and rendering are included at no extra charge, so you can see the space before we build it. If you want the design on its own, it starts at $2,700, and that amount is credited toward the project if you go ahead with us.

What warranty do you offer?

Warranty length follows the material, because different materials wear in different ways: retaining walls 20-Year, aluminum and vinyl 20-Year, pavers 15-Year, artificial turf 15-Year, concrete 10-Year, wood 5-Year and irrigation 1-Year. That is our workmanship warranty on the installation, written into your contract. Ask us what applies to your scope at the in-home consultation.

Are you a licensed contractor?

Yes, Sunny Builders Group is a licensed California contractor, CSLB #1098213, classifications B, C-27. We are bonded and carry workers’ compensation and liability insurance. You can verify the license on the CSLB website.

What areas do you serve?

We work across San Diego County and Temecula Valley. See the full list on our service areas page.

Do you only build outdoor projects?

Outdoor living is our specialty and the bulk of what we build. We are also a licensed general contractor, so we take on interior remodels: kitchens, bathrooms and flooring. If a project runs from the backyard into the house, it stays with one licensed contractor and one crew instead of being split between two companies.

Do you offer financing?

Yes, financing options are available for your project. Ask us about the current plans when you book your free in-home consultation.
